Building codes & standards

Enforcement of the CSA - A660 Standard

The 2010 NBC has been issued including the CSA A660-04 as a required standard. The revised CSA A660-10 standard has included a definition of a Steel Building System - as an integrated assembly of manufactured steel primary structural components, secondary structural components of any material, and cladding of any material, specifically designed by the manufacturer to support and transfer loads and provide a complete or partial building shell, which includes membrane covered frame structures. Members of the Membrane Structures Manufacturers Association must be certified to the CSA A660 standard.

Rulings from provincial jurisdictions are as follows:

ALBERTA

As the Chief Building Administrator for the province,I have been addressing this issue of certification to CSA A660 for several years now. The definition of a Steel Building System included in A660 was actually requested by me to the CSA committee. Safety codes officers in Alberta have been made aware of this requirement on numerous occasions over the past several years. Rest assured that if the question is ever raised with our department, the answer is given that manufacturers of fabric covered structures that utilise a steel frame system for support must be certified to CSA A660.
